Since its debut on YouTube Red in May 2018, when it was a spin-off of The Karate Kid, Cobra Kai has been one of Netflix’s most popular shows. Every time a new season comes out, it stays in the Top 10 most-watched worldwide for weeks.
Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg made Cobra Kai. Netflix bought it and started making it starting with the third season. Since then, Netflix has taken over production, giving it a huge boost and turning it into a phenomenon with a much wider reach.
Season Six Will Be the Final Season
It was officially announced in a joint announcement by Netflix and the series creators that it will have a sixth season, after which the series will conclude.
In addition to a brief signed by the three creators, Netflix released a teaser trailer featuring scenes from the previous five seasons, as well as a note that the sixth season will be the final one.
The trailer only mentions that it will be released soon, but no specific date is given. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it will happen near the end of this year. Netflix’s decision to end with season six will allow Heald, Hurwitz, and Schlossberg to complete the series as planned.
“It has been our humbling honor to reconnect the world with the Karate Kid universe,” the trio said in a statement. “Making Cobra Kai has allowed us to join the same hallowed dojo once inhabited by the great Robert Mark Kamen, John Avildsen, Jerry Weintraub, and all of the incredible original cast members.
It has also given us the opportunity to play sensei, expanding on the original plots and giving birth to a new generation of underdogs. We’ve never taken this chance for granted.
“Our goal with Cobra Kai has always been to finish it on our terms, leaving the Valley at the time and place we’ve always envisioned. As a result, we can announce this accomplishment with great pride and gratitude. Cobra Kai will come to an end with the upcoming sixth season.”
One of Netflix’s Most Successful Series
Cobra Kai’s huge success comes from the fact that it brings back the original characters and actors from the Karate Kid movies and shows them in the modern day, along with a young cast with whom the stories have blended together seamlessly to create a phenomenon.
When new seasons are released, Cobra Kai is in both the company’s internal top 10 and the Nielsen streaming charts. Season five started in September and stayed at the top of the Nielsen ratings for six weeks.
