(AP) — NEW YORK No, people aren’t sick of hearing about Prince Harry. With the success of “Spare,” the Duke of Sussex has joined a small group of people.

Penguin Random House said on Wednesday that Harry’s tell-all memoir sold more than 1.4 million copies on its first day. This is a new record for nonfiction from the company that also publishes Barack and Michelle Obama, whose “Becoming” took a week to reach 1.4 million when it came out in 2018.

“Spare” sales numbers include sales of hardcover, audiobook, and e-book versions in the US, Canada, and the UK. Gina Centrello, president and publisher of the Random House Group, said in a statement, “‘Spare’ is the story of someone we thought we already knew, but now we can really get to know Prince Harry through his own words.”

“With these amazing first-day sales, it’s clear that readers agree that ‘Spare’ is a must-read book, and we’re proud to publish it.”

“Spare,” Harry’s very personal and intimate memoir about his life in the royal family and his relationship with the American actress Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, is one of the most anticipated memoirs in recent years.

Since then, more than 15 million copies of Michelle Obama’s memoir have been sold around the world, and sales keep going up, in part because of good reviews. So far, people have had different reactions to “Spare.”

Alexandra Jacob, a critic for the New York Times, said that the book and its author are “all over the place, both emotionally and physically.” Sometimes they are “frank and funny,” and sometimes they are all about Harry’s anger at the British press.

Louis Bayard wrote in The Washington Post that “Spare” is “good-natured, sarcastic, funny, self-righteous, self-deprecating, long-winded, and sometimes confusing.”
