A suburban New York man had threatened to attack the New York City Pride March which will be held in the year 2021 with “firepower” that would “make the 2016 Orlando Pulse Nightclub shooting look like a cakewalk,” federal prosecutors had said this on Monday as they had announced criminal charges.
Robert Fehring, 74, of Bayport, had allegedly sent letters threatening to assault, shoot, and bomb LGBTQ+ affiliated individuals, organizations, and some businesses.
A search of his home last month turned up photographs from a Pride event in East Meadow of the year 2021, New York, two had loaded shotguns, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, two stun guns, and had a stamped envelope addressed to an LGBTQ+ affiliated attorney containing the remains of a dead bird, federal prosecutors had said.
“As alleged, the defendant’s hate-filled invective and threats of violence had been directed at members of the LGBTQ+ community have no other place in our society and that will be prosecuted to the fullest extent to the law,” said by United States Attorney Breon Peace.
Fehring had been sending these kinds of threatening letters since at least from the year 2013, according to the criminal complaint. In them, he had threatened the use of firearms and explosives.
One letter had threatened that there would “be radio-controlled devices which will be placed at numerous strategic places” at the 2021 New York City Pride March with “firepower” that would “make the 2016 Orlando Pulse Nightclub shooting look like a cakewalk,” referencing the attack of the year 2016 in which 49 persons had been killed, the complaint had said.
The complaint quoted from a letter Fehring is also alleged to have a sent to the organizer of a June 2021 Pride event in the East Meadow, New York:
“We were right there you…FREAK!!! They couldn’t get a shot off on you, slithering around the backstage area like a snake. Many cops.
Many were disappointed. But your time has to come. . .. They are out to KILL you….and your boyfriend. You are being watched. No matter how much long it takes, you had be taken out…. high-powered bullet…. bomb….knife…. whatever it will take.”
Fehring’s next door neighbor whose name is Brian Bennett, said to the FBI which came to Fehring’s home last month.
