Marreese Speights was born on August 4, 1987 in St. Petersburg, Florida. He was raised by his mother Regina Glenn-Speights.

He played at St. Petersburg’s Admiral Farragut Academy for one season. He played 2 years of college basketball at Florida with Corey Brewer and won a national championship as a backup during his freshman season.

Marreese Speights College Career

Speights started his college career at the University of Florida in 2006–07. As a freshman for the national champion Gators, he averaged four points and two rebounds in six minutes per game.

Speights college career’s season ended in the 2007–08 with the averaging 14.5 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game. After his sophomore season, he decided to go for the 2008 NBA Draft.

Philadelphia 76ers (2008–2012)

Speights was drafted with the 16th pick of the first round in the 2008 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers and signed with Philadelphia on July 18, 2008.

In his first season with 76ers, his field-goal percentage included .502 from the field, playing 79 games, shooting .773 from the free throw line, and notching two starts. In his second season, he scored around more than 15 points in five of his first 10 games.

Speights injured his left knee on Novemeber 14. He missed 14 games due to his knee injury. He made his come back on December 16, and played against the Cleveland Cavalier.
However, his performance and play style was affected when 76ers hired a new head coach,
Doug Collins for the 2010-11 season. The clashes between Speights and the coaching staff led to a career-low 11.5 minutes per contest.
