It Is Time for a Pandemic Strategy for the “New Normal,” According to Former Biden Advisers

WASHINGTON — On the day President Joe Biden was put into the position, the planning board of health experts who supported him during his transition officially ceased to exist. On the other side, its members have quietly continued to fulfill regularly over Zoom, their conversations were frustrations with Biden’s coronavirus response. 

At this point, six of those former advisers resurfaced in public with an unprecedented, albeit polite, critique and a plea to be heard. In three opinion articles published Thursday within the Journal of the American Medical Association, they mixed up Biden to adopt a completely new domestic pandemic strategy geared to the “new normal” of living with the virus indefinitely, to not wiping it out. These authors are all big names in the medical industry.

Some of them, including Dr. Luciana Borio, a former acting chief scientist at the Food and Drug Administration, and Dr. David Michaels, a former head of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration now with George Washington University’s School of Public Health, has held high-ranking government positions.

Also, Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, an oncologist, medical ethicist, and University of Pennsylvania professor who advised former President Barack Obama, organized the resurfacing. 

Like any White House, Biden prizes loyalty and prefers to stay its differences in the house; therein regard, the articles are an unusual step. The authors say they wrote them partly because they need not make headway talking to White House officials. 

Dr. Luciana Borio, a former US Food and Drug Administration official now with the Council on Foreign Relations, Bright and Emanuel necessitate vaccine mandates, variant-specific vaccines, and accelerated efforts to develop universal coronavirus vaccines, still as the rapid development of effective oral antivirals.

They presented these strategies on how to achieve and sustain the new normal living stated, “Integral to achieving and sustaining this ‘new normal’ are both faster development and more efficient deployment of vaccines and therapeutics,” they write. Some estimates suggest that 90% or more of individuals within the US need some immunity to SARS-CoV-2 to reduce the results of Covid-19 and return to normalcy.”

Currently, about 62.3% of the full US population — about 207 million people — is fully vaccinated. Mandates are going to be required, they say, adding that “few countries have ever achieved such levels of coverage of any vaccine without vaccination requirements. Proposed vaccine requirements for state employees and contractors, health care and long-term care workers, and employees of companies with 100 or more employees are necessary to attain levels of coverage to return to pre-COVID-19 life and social and economic vitality.
