Reinaldo Maria Cordeiro, also known as “Uncle Ray,” was known as an industry powerhouse on his long-running radio shows. He was credited with launching the careers of many local musicians and introducing Hong Kong pop fans to new trends.

He has talked to a lot of famous pop artists over the years, like the Beatles, the Bee Gees, Ella Fitzgerald, and Frank Sinatra. The funeral committee said that Cordeiro died on Friday in Hong Kong. His family and friends sang “You’ll Never Walk Alone” in his honor.

Kevin Yeung, the city’s culture minister, said on Saturday that the veteran DJ was a “prominent figure in Hong Kong popular culture” who made “significant contributions to the Hong Kong music scene.”

Cordeiro was born in Hong Kong in 1924. He was the fifth of six kids in a family with roots in Portugal. Before he got into music, he worked as a prison warden and a bank clerk. In 1949, he had his first show on Radio Rediffusion called “Progressive Jazz.”
