A 35-year-old person from Buffalo, New York, was died in a paragliding accident Friday afternoon in Palm Bay’s The Compound area, police said Saturday.
The Compound is a sprawling 12.2-square-mile undeveloped area in Palm Bay’s southwestern outskirts. This area has about 200 miles of highways developed by General Development Corp., which declared bankruptcy in 1991.
The deadly incident happened shortly after 4:30 p.m. Friday near the junction of Woodstock Drive and Tarbora Terrace, near the western terminus of Osmosis Drive, according to Palm Bay Police Lt. Jeff Spears.
According to Spears, the man, whose identity has not been released, was paragliding with a group of people when the tragedy occurred. He was brought to a local hospital and declared dead.
Spears stated that Palm Bay police would try to discover why the paraglider crashed because a paraglider accident does not come under the Federal Aviation Administration or the National Transportation Safety Board’s investigative requirements. “So we’re looking into that with our detectives,” Spears explained.
