The online petition for $2,000 monthly stimulus checks for the duration of the pandemic has just over 45,000 signatures left to reach its goal of 3 million.

Stephanie Bonin, a Denver restaurant owner, started the petition.

Bonin sent the petition to both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the United States. According to the Change.org website, the petition is on its way to becoming one of the site’s most popular.

“Our country is still deeply struggling,” the petition reads. Many Americans have yet to benefit from the recovery; the true unemployment rate for low-wage workers is estimated to be over 20%, and many people are saddled with large debts from the previous year for things like utilities, rent, and child care.

Those are reasons why checks should be targeted at people who are still struggling, and Congress should learn from the previous year’s mistakes. Congress took nine months to send a second stimulus check, and only seconds to spend it.

Onward and upward If certain triggers are met, Congress should make recurring checks automatic. There will be no more waiting for our government to send the assistance we require. Sign up to be a part of our movement to give people recurring checks.

Even the maximum payouts will not be enough for most people to keep paying their bills – and avoid falling into poverty – for our team and other Americans who are eligible for unemployment benefits. Even successful small businesses can’t afford to close their doors for months at a time.

However, providing Americans with monthly assistance until they are able to re-establish themselves can save our communities from financial ruin.

However, it appears that the government will need more than the millions of signatures on the site to address the critical needs.

Congress has previously stated that stimulus checks are no longer a top priority for the Biden administration, which is focusing on other issues.
