“Fame” and “Flashdance” Theme Singer Irene Cara Dies at 63!

Irene Cara, who won both an Oscar and a Grammy, has died, according to her publicist. She was best known in the early 1980s for singing the theme songs for the movies “Fame” and “Flashdance.” She was 63 at the time.

Judith Moose wrote in a tweet about the singer’s death, “Please share your condolences and memories of Irene.” “I’ll read all of them, and I’m sure she’ll be smiling up in heaven.” She loved all of her fans.

“She had a beautiful, bright spirit, and her music and pictures will last forever.” Cara died in her home in Florida. Moose’s statement says that the cause of death is still unknown.

Cara started her acting career as a child on the TV show “Electric Company.” When she was a teenager, she got parts in the movies “Aaron Loves Angela” and “Sparkle.”

Her big break came in 1980 when she played Coco Hernandez in the musical “Fame,” which was about New York’s High School for the Performing Arts. She had a hit with the movie’s title song and also with the ballad “Out Here on My Own.” She was up for a Golden Globe and two Grammys that year.

Cara helped write the lyrics for “Flashdance… What a Feeling,” another radio hit for which she won an Oscar for Best Original Song and a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female three years later.

“Why Me” and “Breakdance” were two of her other singles. She also acted in movies with Burt Reynolds, Clint Eastwood, Mr. T, and Tatum O’Neal, like “City Heat,” “D.C. Cab,” and “Certain Fury.”
