Some of the gunmen who invaded the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Jos, Plateau State, have been stuck inside.
On Sunday evening, Francis Enobore, the Controller of Corrections (Public Relations Officer), confirmed the attack on behalf of the Controller-General of Corrections..
He further said that the attackers engaged in a gun duel with the prison’s security guards before bursting into the yard.
He did, however, emphasize that the shooters were locked within the facility.
“The Medium Security Custodial Centre in Jos, Plateau State, was attacked by gunmen who allegedly stormed the institution in huge numbers with sophisticated weaponry,” he claimed.
“The intruders were alleged to have arrived at the Custodial Center at 1720hrs and promptly made their way to the front gate, where they engaged the armed squad officers in a gun duel before breaching into the yard.” Despite gaining access to the yard, they are locked inside because personnel from sister security services were instantly dispatched to help the armed guards in cordoning off the surrounding wall and the whole area. The Service’s reaction unit has also been dispatched to the center for reinforcement.
“The situation is currently under control, as superior fire from a joint team of security agencies is subduing the assailants’ shooting strength.” “An update will be provided as the event develops.”
