Authorities said Friday that they are still looking into the death of a 31-year-old woman who was found this week near the end of a hike in Zion National Park.

According to a news release from the park, the woman and her 33-year-old husband had a permit to hike the 16-mile Narrows trail along the Virgin River. She was found unresponsive about a mile from the busy paved section of the Riverside Walk in the park’s main canyon.

The man told the people looking for them that the couple had been “dangerously cold” and showing signs of hypothermia since Tuesday night.

According to the news release, they stopped about a mile and a half from the north end of the Riverside Walk. In the morning, the man went on his own to find help.

An email from the park says that when rescuers found the woman upstream, they tried to help her but “determined that she was dead.” The garden was below-freezing on Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning.

The Narrows is a popular hike that goes through a slot canyon and requires hikers to walk through water often. The 16-mile “top-down” hike into Zion’s main canyon can take two days if hikers stop to camp.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner, and the National Park Service were still looking into how the woman died.
