The Omicron variety has been found in at least 38 nations, but no deaths have been reported, according to the World Health Organization, despite worries that it might harm the global economic recovery.

As Omicron infections pushed South Africa’s total case count beyond 3 million, the United States and Australia became the latest nations to confirm locally transmitted instances of the variation.

The WHO has cautioned that determining how contagious the variety is, whether it causes more severe illness, and how effective medicines and immunizations are against it might take weeks.

“We’re going to get the answers that everyone out there needs,” said Michael Ryan, WHO’s head of emergencies.

The WHO stated on Friday that it has not received any reports of Omicron-related deaths, but the new variant’s spread has prompted fears that it might cause more than half of Europe’s Covid cases in the coming months.

The new variation, like the Delta strain, might hinder global economic recovery, according to International Monetary Fund president Kristalina Georgieva on Friday.

“Even before the emergence of this new version, we were worried that the recovery, while continuing, was losing some traction,” she explained. “A novel variety that spreads quickly can erode trust.”

According to a preliminary investigation conducted by researchers in South Africa, where the variety was initially detected on November 24, it is three times more likely to induce reinfections than the Delta or Beta variants.

According to Francesco Rocca, the head of the Red Cross, the appearance of Omicron was the “final evidence” of the dangers of uneven worldwide immunization rates.

Uur ahin, CEO of BioNTech, which collaborates with Pfizer to develop the Covid vaccine, stated that the business should be able to change the doses rather rapidly. Despite alterations, he believes existing vaccinations should continue to give protection against serious illness.

Omicron instances were recorded for the first time in New Jersey, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, and Utah. It has also been discovered in the states of California, Colorado, Hawaii, Minnesota, and New York. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it was looking into probable Omicron variant instances in other states.
