At least eight people were shot during a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration in Fort Pierce, Florida, according to the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office. The gunfire caused a lot of chaos, and the sheriff’s office says that one person is in critical condition and four others were hurt.

Chief Deputy Brian Hester of the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office said that shots were fired after the “MLK Car Show and Family Fun Day” at Ilous Ellis Park.

Hester said that eight people were taken to the hospital because they had been shot. The conditions of the seven people who were not in critical condition were not updated right away.

No one was in custody, and it wasn’t clear if a suspect or suspects had been found, but Hester said that police are following several leads and tips from the public. Hester said that the evidence showed that more than one person shot the people.

Hester says that all eight of the people who were shot were adults and that one of the people who was hurt after the shooting was a child.

Hester said that there were two deputies at the event to keep people safe, but neither of them could see the shooter or shooters. Hester says that both deputies helped victims.

Hester went on to say that it was “unfortunate and sad” that a fight broke out at a party for a person who stood for peace and equality, and that guns and violence were used to settle the fight.
