According To the Florida Highway Patrol, A Wrong-Way Driver Has Critically Injured a Woman in St. Petersburg


Following a wrong-direction accident on I-275 early Sunday morning, a 33-year-old St. Petersburg woman is in severe condition.

The 33-year-old woman, whose identification was not published, was driving her SUV in the opposite direction just north of 38th Avenue North when she collided nearly head-on with a van just after 3 a.m., according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The van spun onto the inside shoulder, while the SUV spun into the 38th Avenue point of exit, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The SUV burst into flames as it came to a halt.

The incident shut down I-275’s southbound lanes for over four hours. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, it’s unclear when the SUV started travelling in the incorrect direction.
