According to South African Officials, the Omicron Variant Is Fueling a ‘exponential’ Rise in Covid Cases

The deadline for the $1,400 prize is quickly approaching. According to local health experts, the Omicron variety has fueled a “worrying” spike in coronavirus infections in South Africa and is quickly becoming the dominant strain, as several nations, including the United States, have reported their first instances.

The UAE and South Korea, who are already dealing with a rising outbreak and recording daily illnesses, have also confirmed cases of the Omicron type.

As per Dr. Michelle Groome of South Africa’s National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), there has been a “exponential increase” in infections over the last two weeks, with a weekly total of about 300 new cases per day climbing to 1,000 last week000 last week and 3,500 most recently. South Africa registered 8,561 instances on Wednesday. A week ago, the daily total was 1,275.

The NICD said that 74% of all viral genomes sequenced last month were of the new type, which was discovered in a sample obtained on November 8 in Gauteng, South Africa’s most populated province.

While major issues concerning the transmissibility of the Omicron form, which has been found in at least a dozen countries around the world, remain unanswered, specialists are racing to assess the amount of protection provided by vaccinations. According to World Health Organization (WHO) epidemiologist Maria van Kerkhove, evidence on how contagious Omicron was should be available “within days.”

According to the NICD, while early epidemiological data revealed that Omicron was able to evade some protection, current immunizations should still protect against severe illness and death.

Uur ahin, BioNTech’s CEO, stated that the vaccine developed in collaboration with Pfizer was anticipated to provide excellent protection against severe Omicron illness.

As nations waited for a clearer picture, several tightened border controls in the goal of halting the virus’s spread.

South Korea tightened travel restrictions after discovering the first five Omicron cases, as concerns increased about how the new type would influence the country’s existing Covid outbreak.

For the next two weeks, authorities have suspended quarantine exemptions for fully vaccinated arriving travelers, who now face a 10-day confinement.

On Thursday, the number of daily infections in South Korea reached a new high of almost 5,200, raising concerns about the dramatic increase in patients with severe symptoms.

Anthony Fauci, a leading infectious diseases specialist in the United States, emphasized that fully vaccinated persons should obtain a booster shot if they are eligible to ensure the maximum possible protection.
